The Maijishan Grottoes, located in Tianshui City, Gansu Province, China, are a magnificent example of Chinese Buddhist art and architecture. The grottoes were first built during the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317-420 AD) and continued to be expanded and embellished over the course of hundreds of years, eventually becoming one of the largest grotto complexes in China. The Maijishan Grottoes are carved into the side of a mountain, which rises dramatically above the surrounding landscape. Visitors must ascend a winding path up the mountain to reach the grottoes, which gives them a sense of awe and reverence before they even step foot inside.
